Site supervisor conference & revisions to internship plan
I am learning how difficult time management is in the superintendents office really is. With a new building being destroyed by a tornado, two administrators doing the superintendent certification, board meetings to hire and fire, budget meetings to guess what the state may do to our district funds and Texas weather she is trying to take care of my revisions and conference. I will post it here as soon as we get to meet for more than five minutes.

Dans Draft Intern Plan
Week 3 Assignment: Developing and Designing Your Intern Plan
Overview
During the last two weeks you have been completing assessments, reviewing your vita, planning and conducting an interview with your Superintendent or other district leader. All of these assignments have been designed to help you prepare for your development of a comprehensive intern plan.
This week’s major assignment will be your development of your Comprehensive Intern Plan described in Week One’s Assignment. We also recommend that you consider using the Action Research Templates (School or Professional Improvement Projects – SIP/PIP template) or Tool 7.1 Action Planning Template. You may also wish to use the district improvement plan as another source for planning your Intern Plan. Remember the Intern Plan covering the 3 Superintendent Domains, 10 Competencies, and the 38 activities from the School Leader Internship text. Remember, all of the templates are located in your course Resource Section. We have included the recommendation to include items from your District Improvement Plan or from the action research templates because you will be required to complete a reflection in EDLD 5399, your Capstone Superintendent Internship/Practicum course, describing district improvement projects you will be helping to implement during your internship.
Learning and Performance Outcomes:
1. Assess personal leadership strengths and needs, using the SBEC Superintendent Competencies Self-Assessment in order to develop a plan of action that addresses the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective leader.
2. Complete the TExES Superintendent Practice test using the TExES Preparation Manual – Superintendent located in the Resource section of the course, assess your competency proficiency, and use the results in developing your Superintendent Intern plan.
3. Create and interact on a blog and Wiki.
4. Create an account and use the TK20 Electronic Portfolio – this performance outcome is dependent on the completion of TK 20 planning with Lamar University.
5. Begin to develop and initiate an Internship Plan that addresses all of the TExES Superintendent and ELCC competencies and quality indicators.

Week 3 Assignment, Part 1: Draft Internship Plan
Your first task is to develop a draft of your Comprehensive Internship Plan. The two major components of this process are:
· Review of Documentation: Prior to listing specific activities in your intern leadership plan, review the areas examined in this course, along with your experiences and expertise. Your purpose is to make a list of general or specific skills or knowledge areas that you want to further develop during the internship.
o SBEC Self-Assessment (completed in Week One)
o SBEC Practice Superintendent Exam and Assessment Analysis (also Week One)
o Application of Leadership Experience – reviewing your leadership experiences coming into the program (Week Two assignment)
o Gaps in Vita: Note any gaps in vita categories, particularly Leadership Experience (Week Two assignment)
o Interviews: Note any relevant suggestions from interview lecture or your district leader/Superintendent interview – pay particular attention to those interview responses addressing Superintendent competencies (Week Two assignment)
o Blog Comments and Wiki Resources – be sure to include technology integration and application in your intern plan
o Needs of the District (District Improvement Plan including vision, goals, Improvement Plan, Etc.): Note any needs you should or will address during your internship. This is an area where you will want advice from the site supervisor or other members of the district leadership team.
o Improvement Project(s): You will be expected to help lead one or more projects – these may be campus improvement projects that you will need to demonstrate as contributing to district improvement. This is another area to seek advice from the site supervisor(s) or other district leaders. We have provided the School or Professional Improvement Project Template or Action Planning Template Tool 7.1 in the Resource section to help you formulate your improvement project(s).
o General Leadership Areas: If you listed any general areas from above and are uncertain about a specific activity or activities, discuss with your site supervisor.
· Organizing the Internship Plan: The details of the organization plan are outlined below. The basic assignment requires you to outline activities in your plan that will assist you in acquiring knowledge and skills needed to become competent in addressing and practicing the ten TExES Superintendent competencies.
The Internship Plan should be organized according to the ten SBEC Superintendent competencies.
Under the ten competencies listed below, you will find a total of 38 skill areas, with a notation of the page(s) in the School Leader Internship text relating to each skill area. The text describes the skills, and provides examples of activities you might include in your plan. While the list of activities described is not exhaustive, it will provide good suggestions and a model to follow.
At the bottom of the list of sample activities is an activity called “Other.” If you choose not to include a listed activity from the text, you may write in another related activity. “Other” related activities are typically chosen according to school needs, goals, and differing opportunities. Your site supervisor should assist in choosing “Other” activities.
In some cases, embedded intern hours from the Superintendent courses will address the three Domains and ten competencies. The minimum of 140 hours in the three following domains in your intern plan is over and above the hours of embedded intern hours from other courses. Embedded intern hours required in other courses will be approximately 140 hours. Thus, the internship should conclude with at least 280 hours.
You are advised to plan for at least one activity in each of the 38 skill areas found in the text, under Plan, pages 19 – 68. Carefully review the 38 leadership skill areas and pencil in a check mark on any activity/activities (or “Other”) in your text prior to meeting with your site supervisor and completing your internship plan. The following correlation of the 38 skill areas and the 10 Superintendent competencies are an analysis provided by the professors. Some of the 38 skill areas will apply to more than one competency, although the list below may not identify the overlapping skill areas. You should feel free to design your plan as needed, but as recommended, be sure to cover all 10 competencies, and try to have at least one activity for each of the 38 leadership skill areas.

Use this chart to make a list of general or specific skills that you want to develop during the internship.
Please refer to the assignments you have completed in preparation for developing your intern plan. The assignments are listed in the first column. The second column asks you to identify the knowledge and skills you need to include in your intern plan based on your preparation and assessments.
Assessment/ Documentation Area | Skills/Knowledge Needed |
SBEC Self-Assessment | I need to memorize the domains again and strengthen my vocabulary for taking the exam. |
SBEC Practice Superintendent Exam and Analysis of Results | I have to become more test smart. The format always gets me to over think. I have to study and think like a superintendent. I realized that a superintendent has to keep everything in mind when making decisions at the top. |
Transfer Theory and Prior Leadership Experiences | I never realized that my educational leadership skills were “transfer theory” on the job. I have to read more books concerning educational strategies and leadership books. |
Vita Gaps | After seeing everyone else’s resume’s I know how blessed I have been. So many of the folks in my cohort are doing really neat things in their districts. Serving in professional organizations and speaking to people about topics they have been published in. What a lofty group I am in. |
Interviews | The first of my two interviews was eye opening. I am really trying to improve as an educator just from having a new perspective from another leader in education. |
Blogs, Wikis and other leadership in Technology needs | I am doing my best trying to use all of these new tools during my SU3001 courses. I know that this is the wave of the future and I am far behind. This will help me see what needs to be done with the students in my school when it comes to technology. |

In your Resources folder, there is a Word file titled “Internship Plan Template.” Use the chart on that file to create the draft of your Internship Plan. From the Resources folder, double-click on the Word file “Internship Plan Template.” Immediately save the file to your desktop, naming it “YourName--Draft Internship Plan.” We also ask that you place your Draft Internship Plan on your Wiki. This will allow your peers to view your intern plan and provide opportunities for them to provide positive feedback and constructive comments for possible improvement.
Sample of the Intern Plan Template is provided below. Remember, when you complete your intern plan, you will need to cover all 10 Superintendent Competencies (see column 2) and at least 38 leadership skill areas (see column 1). Column 3 will provide a description of the activity you identified in Column 1. The activity should be measurable, like an objective or outcome.

The Internship Plan is a brief, but specific, document indicating your overall approach to the Internship Program. Within this document, you will briefly identify the areas of activities you will approach and indicate which of the ten TExES Superintendent Competencies and Quality Indicators are used with each. You will also provide a brief description of the activities, your resource person to be used, and estimated completion date for the entire plan. As always, this is a living document and subject to update and change.
District action research plan – Students may wish to add an action research plan to their Superintendent Intern Plan since you will be required to identify some district or campus improvement project as part of your intern plan. You may use the two Action Research templates (School or Professional Improvement – SIP/PIP) Template or the Tool 7.1 Action Plan Template.
Week 3 Assignment, Part 2: Peer Review and Feedback
When you finish the draft of your Internship Plan, please post in on your wiki. By the end of Week 3, your course section peers should have their draft intern plans posted on their Wiki. In completing this activity, we ask you to review at least three other intern plans from your peers. In Week 4, you will have an opportunity to expand on lessons learned from reviewing comments to your intern plan.
What did you like and learn about the reviewed draft intern plans? Identify at least one activity in the reviewed plans that caught your attention and explain why. What recommendations, if any, did you make to your peer’s draft intern plan? If you did not make any recommendations, please briefly discuss what you learned from reviewing your peer’s constructive comments and positive feedback on your intern plan.
What I liked and learned from my peer’s draft intern plans? What I enjoyed about other people’s intern plans was the diversity and intelligence in our cohort. I know I would want them to be my boss. I learned to ask for help on this assignment. Identify at least one activity from one of my peer’s draft intern plans that caught my attention and explain why. When I saw Krin doing presentations over some of the Internship activities I knew she would be a great resource for the future. Share any recommendations you made to your peer’s intern plans. Or discuss what you learned from reviewing your peer’s constructive comments and positive feedback on your intern plan. I just asked how they filled the chart out. All the plans I read were very well done. |
Preparing for Intern Plan Conference with Site Supervisor – Once you have completed your draft intern plan and reviewed comments on your intern plan from your peers, we strongly recommend that you send your intern plan, with any new revisions based on the peer review, to your site supervisor via email, or make the site supervisor a hard copy and deliver it to him or her requesting that they review it prior to your Week 5 meeting with your site supervisor to review, and possibly revise your comprehensive intern plan before submitting the revision and this final draft to your Wiki and TK 20 portfolio.
